Common PC Hardware Problems
& the Repair & Upgrade Solutions
We Provide (With Prices):
My PC has no
power. Nothing lights up when I press the start button.
Helpful
Note: If you have a desktop, before calling us,
check to see if you have a power supply switch in the back of your PC.
If you have one, it will be located next to the power cord. It may be switched off.
Also, make sure your power cord is plugged in, both at the
wall and PC. Lastly, test your wall outlet to make sure it is live, by plugging a light into it.
If your desktop or laptop will not start, we will check for
each of the following three possible causes:
-
Failed Power
Supply. Using a power supply tester, we will check
to see if the power supply has failed. If it has, the
cost to replace the power supply is $65 for the diagnostic, plus the cost of the new power
supply.
-
Failed Power
Switch. Using a multimeter, we will test the
switch. If it has failed, the cost to replace the
power switch is $65 labor plus
the cost of the new switch.
-
Motherboard
failure. Cost to replace the motherboard: $99 labor plus cost of new
motherboard for desktops, $149 for laptops.
When
replacing the motherboard, we will, at your optiion, upgrade the processor
and the memory at no additional labor charge.
Note: If you have a
desktop, and only the
switching circuit in the motherboard has failed, in
many models, at
your option, we can bypass it rather than replace the
motherboard. If we do, then you will only be able to
turn the PC off and on by
using the power switch in back, or if it does not have
a power switch in back, unplugging it. Cost to
bypass motherboard switching circuit: $65 labor.
My PC beeps but
does not turn on.
These beeps are usually
coded, and the type of beep can help us to identify the
cause of the problem. Here are the most common causes:
-
A
failed ISA, PCI, or PCIe card. We will remove or replace
the faulty card. Cost: $65 labor plus cost of the new
card.
-
Mismatched
or failed memory module: Cost to replace: $65 diagnostic and replacement labor plus cost of
the part.
-
Motherboard
failure. Typically, motherboard failure is caused by
lightning or a voltage surge, which sometimes (but not
typically) also takes out the memory and processor. Cost to replace:
$99 labor plus cost of new
motherboard for desktops, $149 for laptops. When
replacing desktop motherboards, we will, at your option, upgrade the processor
and the memory at no additional labor charge (there is a
cost for parts, however).
My
laptop monitor is flickering, blacking out, has fuzzy areas,
or is producing strange artifacts or patterns.
Here
are the four most common causes of this:
-
A
failing graphics chip. This usually requires replacing
the entire motherboard. The cost for this is $149 labor,
plus the cost of the new motherboard.
-
One
of the cables which goes between the body of the laptop
and the monitor is failing due to metal fatigue. The
cost to replace it is $75 plus the cost of the cable.
-
The
inverter board is failing. The cost to replace it is $65
labor plus the cost of the inverter board.
-
A
failing monitor closure switch. The cost to replace it is $65
labor plus the cost of the switch or switch board.
My
laptop screen is damaged or cracked.
We
can replace the LCD unit. The cost is $65 labor plus the
cost of the LCD unit.
My
PC turns on, but I cannot connect to the internet.
Most
often, this is a driver or a configuration issue. The cost
to repair this is $65 labor.
It is also possible that your network
interface card (NIC) has failed. If it is built into the
motherboard (on-board), often a separate card can be
installed. The cost to replace or add a new NIC is $65 labor
plus parts.
I
am no longer receiving a wireless signal on my laptop.
There
are several possible causes of this:
-
A
corrupted or out of date driver. The cost is $65 to
reinstall it.with the latest update.
-
A
bad wireless antenna cable, which typically
extends from the bottom lower side of the motherboard to
the top of the monitor. The cost to replace it is $85
labor plus the cost of the new part.
-
Motherboard
failure. Typically, motherboard failure is caused by
lightning or a voltage surge. Cost to replace :
$149.
A
fan in my PC has become very noisy. It is driving me crazy!
In
desktops, this
is caused either by a failing power supply fan, case cooling
fan, or processor cooling fan. We can replace your noisy
case or processor fan with a new low-noise fan that has a
low dBA rating. If the cause is the power supply fan, we
must replace the entire power supply. The cost in either
case is $65 plus the cost of the part.
My
hard drive is making strange noises.
This
is often a sign of imminent hard drive failure. Don't
delay calling us, or you may lose your valuable files!
We will test
your hard drive for a $65 diagnostic fee, and if it is about to
fail but not too far gone, \we will “clone” it onto a new
replacement hard drive! There will be no need for you to
reinstall anything. The cost for cloning both desktop and
laptop hard drives is an additional $65 labor (besides the
diagnostic fee) plus the cost of the new hard drive.
My
hard drive is no longer working, and I need to retrieve my files.
A
hard drive diagnostic needs to be performed ($65). If your hard
drive was not making any strange noises before it failed,
it's PCB (printed circuit board) may have been damaged
by a surge or ESD. In many cases, I can order a matching PCB
from a used drive. If the problem is not with the PCB, I
will refer you to a recovery specialist.
Caution:
Rather than removing your hard drive yourself, please just bring the
entire PC to us. If you remove the hard drive yourself, but
fail to follow proper ESD procedures, you may damage the
PCB board. This happens much more often than you might
think!
MY
PC is running too slowly.
Here
are some of the most common causes:
1.
Insufficient
memory, mismatched memory, or damaged
memory. Click here to learn about our Memory
Diagnostic and Upgrade Service. 2.
Malware (including viruses, trojans, spyware,
and adware), as well as unnecessary startup
applications running in the background.
Click here to read about our Read
about our Malware Removal
Services.
3.
Registry errors.
Your
computer's registry is the central repository for
information about operating system settings, program
settings and files. Since uninstall programs are often
not written well, when you uninstall an application,
the information concerning it may not be removed from
the registry. This can slow
your computer's performance. Click to learn about our PC
Tuneup Service, which
corrects and removes this information. 4.
You hard drive is fragmented.
Defragmentation is included with our PC
Tuneup Service, 5.
Your computer is old, but your operating system or
applications are much newer. If
this is the case, you must either upgrade your
motherboard (this cannot usually be done with laptops) or replace
your computer to obtain better performance. Cost to
replace your desktop motherboard:
$99 labor plus cost of new
motherboard, processor, heatsink with fan, and memory. 6.
Your processor is overheating.
If your computer operates fine when you first turn it
on, but performance goes down the longer it is on, your
processor may be getting too hot. Overheating can also
cause freezes, erratic behavior, error messages, warning
beeps and sudden shutdowns, including the infamous
"blue screen of death." When
this is the case, we blow out all of the dust with
an ESD safe blower designed especially for PCs.
Our
labor cost for this service is ($65).
My
Computer Freezes or Crashes Suddenly
There
are several possible causes of this:
-
A
corrupted or out-of-date application or driver. I will
check your event logs to see if this is the case, and if
it is, remove, replace, or reinstall the offending
application or driver. Cost: $65 labor.
-
An
overheating processor. This can be caused by
A.
Dust accumulation in the heat sink cooling fins. If
this is the case, I will blow out all of the dust with
an ESD safe vacuum/blower designed especially for PCs.
Our
labor cost for this service is ($65).
Warning: Don't try
to clean out your PC at home with a vacuum cleaner,
blower, or other device that is not designed to be ESD safe. The
static discharge from the device might ruin your PC!
Recently, I was called out to a client's office
because of server hard drive failure. He had cleaned
his hot-swappable drives with a vacuum cleaner. The
static ruined two of his three hard drive PCB boards.
B.
A failed or failing heat sink cooling fan. The cost to
replace is $65 plus the cost of the part.
-
A
failed memory module. We will run diagnostic tests on
your memory, and if a module has failed, replace it.
Cost: $65 labor plus the cost of the new module.
-
A
failing processor (this is usually caused by a
lightening strike, voltage surge, ESD, or overheating).
Cost to replace: $65 labor plus the cost of the
processor for desktops, $145 for laptops.
My
Screen text looks fuzzy.
This
can occur when your screen resolution settings do not match
the native resolution of your LCD monitor.
We can come to home or office to adjust the resolution. The cost is
$65 labor.
I
know how to adjust the resolution, but I can't get my new
monitor to look right.
If
photos look distorted or text fuzzy on your new LCD monitor,
then your graphics card may not match the native
resolution of the monitor. We can install a matching
graphics card for you. The cost is $65 plus the cost
of the new card.
The
print is too small on my new monitor.
This usually
does not involve an upgrade, but rather configuration.
I can come to your home or office to configure the text so that it is larger and
much easier to read. If you have a vision
handicap, I can configure your PC to magnify anything you
move your mouse over, for easy reading. The cost is $65 labor.
My
PC (Laptop or Desktop) is too slow.
A
memory
upgrade is an economical option that can work wonders.
To achieve the best performance, the memory must be
matched to motherboard specifications, especially to
operate in dual-channel mode. Dual channel mode
doubles memory throughput and can greatly improve the
responsiveness of your system. We will match the
memory to your motherboard manufacturer's specifications.
The cost is $65 labor plus parts.
I
keep running out of hard disc space.
I can add an
additional larger hard drive for storage, or
"clone" your existing hard drive to a newer,
larger one. You will not need to reinstall any
software. The cost is $69 plus the cost of the new
drive.
I
have poor game or video graphics.
A
new graphics card will make all the
difference in the world! But your new graphics card
must be matched to your motherboard specifications.
For instance, if up-plugging is not supported by your
motherboard, replacing your on-board graphics with a new PCI-e card
which does not fill the entire PCI-e slot might cause
your computer to run more slowly
(or only just as fast) as before!
Call
us to perform the upgrade, and we will match your
motherboard to the best graphics card available within your budget.
If
you want blazing fast performance for gaming, if your
motherboard supports SLI, we can install multiple PCIe
graphics cards.
The cost
is $65 labor plus
the cost of the new graphics card(s).
My
desktop has poor sound.
A
new sound card and speakers
will greatly enhance your listening enjoyment. You can
enjoy high fidelity and even 7.1 surround sound! The
cost is $65 labor plus the cost of the new sound card and
speakers.
I
am a songwriter, singer or musician, and want to be able to
record with my PC.
I
am a singer/songwriter myself, so this is of particular
interest to me. If you have a desktop, I can install
a special audio card and software to make this
possible! I can also install an additional hard drive
for song storage, and a CD burner. If your PC has a noisy
fan which will interfere with recording, I can replace
it with a quiet one. If you have a laptop, I can install the
drivers and software for an external USB or firewire
recording unit for this. The recommended setup and price
will depend on your system. Call me for a price quote, and
have the make and model number of your PC handy.
I
want
to open, copy and burn CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray on my
desktop.
I
can install a Blu-ray , DVD or CD burner for you! The cost
is $65 plus the cost of the part.
I
want
to more conveniently transfer photos, music and files from
my digital camera, smartphone, or PDA's media
card to my computer.
If your device uses a memory card
(such as a Flash
card, SD card, or MicroSD card), we can install a
media card reader into the front panel of your
computer which will take a variety of different size
cards, and will add an additional has USB and firewire
port. After we install it, just remove the
card from your camera, phone, or PDA, insert it into
the computer, and presto! Your photos, music and files
will be instantly available! The cost is $65 labor plus the cost
of the part.
My
problem is not listed here.

-
We
observe ESD safety precautions:
Electrostatic
Discharge, or ESD, can
damage sensitive computer components such
as motherboards,
memory, and cards. Merely shuffling one's feet on carpet
while working inside a computer can cause ESD damage! Since
ESD damage can also build with time, a careless technician
could damage your computer and you not even know it - until
it fails months later. I follow proper safety precautions
and use grounding wrist straps and antistatic pads to
prevent electric potential from building up between the
technician and your valuable computer equipment.
Did
you know:
-
Human
skin is not capable of feeling a static shock of
less than 3000 volts. Yet only
100 volts of static electricity can damage a
sensitive electrical component!
-
10,000
volts of static electricity is required to produce a
visible spark.
-
You
can generate 20,000 volts of static potential merely
by dragging your shoes across carpet in a room with
low humidity! (However, because the current is very
low, the high voltage will not harm you, though it
may hurt just a little. It can harm computer
components, however!)
